Back Cover Text

"This is the history of the changing face of Eastrington from Saxon times to the present day. Read about the Eastrington man who died in York Castle, accused of high treason; the vicar's bitter feud with the local Quakers; and the adventurous villagers who were amongst the first pioneers of Canada. From shopkeepers to shoemakers, Eastrington's inhabitants come alive in this wonderfully detailed account of village life through the centuries.

There are chapters on the history of the church and chapels, the school, the shops, the farms, the inns, the show and much more. The stories of many long-established local families are also featured.

This book also includes a wealth of reminiscences from bygone times which are fast disappearing from living memory. Do you remember liberty bodices, pig-killing and drawing your water from a well? Did you go to Sunday School parties and drink warm school milk from little bottles?

Eastrington is illustrated with over a hundred photographs, drawings and maps of the local area. The author's family has lived in the village since the seventeenth century."

Further details of the book

I have been researching this book for over 30 years and along the way have met, written to and corresponded via email with lots of people who have family connections with the village of Eastrington where I grew up. All have been very helpful and I hope that this book will evoke memories and answer questions about past villagers and buildings.

I have enjoyed writing and finding out about what is a typical, but to me special, East Yorkshire village but the research had to stop somewhere and so here is the result! There are 36 chapters altogether covering most aspects of village life through the centuries.

Index

This not by any means a comprehensive index; there are so many names and places mentioned in this book that it would have been impossible to include every one without the index taking on massive proportions! However, I have tried to index all the major local places, houses and families featured.

Eastrington, an East Riding village also contains several long lists, such as Eastrington landowners and tenants at enclosure in 1822, but these names are not indexed.
