Gilberdyke and Newport roll of honour

Listed below are the names of those men from the Gilberdyke and Newport area who lost their lives in the First World War.

Gilberdyke Village hall is properly called the Gilberdyke  Memorial Hall and was opened on January 5th 1924 as a memorial both to those who served and those who died. There is a roll of honour listing those in the hall, shown below.


Some names  appear on other memorials – eg in the Wesleyan chapel, and in Newport church while  some names seem to be on neither even though we have found details of the  deaths of the men concerned.

Below are the rolls of honour in the Gilberdyke Wesleyan chapel. Sadly one has been badly damaged by water.

Nov 1914

Official news was received by Mr Scott, Gilberdyke. Friday, confirming the death of his son, Mr T. Scott, who was killed in France. A memorial service was held on Sunday morning at Newport.

Oct 1915

Private T A. Scott, 3rd East Yorks., No. 5349, who was killed Blouet in France. He was the second son of Mr Scott, signalman. Pear Tree House, Gilberdyke.

November 1916

Mr and Mrs David Woodall, of Newport, received the sad news of the death of their eldest son, Parkin Woodall, K.0.Y.L.1., on  Friday week. The parents recived letters letters the previous day from Canon Adderley and Sister Coombe. from 16, General Hospital, France, saying he was wounded on October 28th  in the back, buttock, and thigh with a bullet and though his temperature was high they hoped for the best. They received the sad news the following day.  Pte. Woodall lost his wife and a daughter in a  Zeppelin raid over a year ago He was a former scholar at the Newport Council school.

May 1917

GILBERDYKE. SAD NEWS,—Mr and Mrs C. Clark, Old Mill. Gilberdyke. received the sad news on Mondav morning, that their second son Ernest was killed in action in France on April 25th. This is the second son they have lost within a month. A son-in-law has been wounded.

This family were at various times also  known as Clark Winter

May 1917

Mr B. Palmer, saddler, of Newport, had a letter from his son, Ernest. in France, saying that he met Harry Waddingham from Newport R.?Lennon from Blacktoft, and A. Precious from Gilberdyke.  Private M. Williamson, of Newport, is in hospital in Worcester.

Sept 1917

GILBERDYKE. Mrs Clayton received official news on Monday morning that her son Arthur was killed in action on September Ist. He had been in hospital in England and only returned to France few weeks ago. He is brother to Mr Walter Clayton, cycle dealer. Two of his brothers – Jack and Fred, are in the army

Jan 1918

Mrs Kelly, of Newport, has received a letter from the officer in command of the late Pte  A E Love’s company. He was killed in action during an attack, but I might  he fought courageously  to the last, like the gallant lad he was. l am sure his death will be a great blow to you, but you have the satisfaction of knowing that he made the greatest of sacrifices in giving his life for his country.—G. May 1918

NEWPORT MEMORIAL SERVICE.—A memorial eervice was held in St. Stephen’s Church on Sunday morning in connection with the death of Pte Charles Cockin, Australian Infantry, who was killed in France on April 4th.  The vicar spoke of the deceased as a scholar in the Sunday School and a member of the choir,

Mr J. Norton, of Gilberdyke, would be glad to hear of his missing son, Pte. Stanley Norton, who was a prisoner of war in Germany, and has not been heard of since September last

The War diary of Emily Jane Harrison [1897-1989]

Emily was born at North America [near Newport]  to parents John and Emily Jane, nee Williamson but was brought up in Sandholme by her aunt Margaret and uncle Abraham after her mother died when she was a baby.

She was a dressmaker. She kept a small diary as a teenager and more during the war years which is a mix of everyday life and war news.

I have edited her diary and added some extra information.

War was declared on Germany August Bank Holiday 1914.

1915

C. Plaster killed at the Dardarnelles on the 7th of August  in the European war and was buried at the foot of Chocolate Hill.
Hilda Harrison born 24th October . A terrible snowstorm fell on November 5th.
Fred Ward went to France November 11th.
Sophia Harrison married on November 27  at Eastrington Church. [ She married John Richard Sweeting] Miss Jasher & Miss Sweeting bridesmaids. It was half past 2 when got home.
Mother bought me night dress case for Xmas.
I spent Xmas  with Annie Scruton Yokefleet Lodge.
The air drome at Spaldington was built in the year 1915 it stands as high as a house 10 stories high.

1916

Mother & I went to Hull 14th January. Bought fur.
L.H.Spence spent the day at Sandholme January 16th .
John Harrison banns published on the 16th of January .
John Harrison married [Emily Buttle] on the 31st January at Newport Church & B Ibbetson bridesmaids & A. Buttle best man.
Archie Bell joined on 31st of January at Sheffield.

Zepp visited Scarborough, Brid  and Withernsea on Thursday February 10th
Went to help Miss Dudley 3 days February .
Mrs Hutchinson sale on February 29th .
The first British airplane was seen on the same day.

Zepps raided Hull on March 5th . Paragon Station Sunday night in a terrific snowstorm a good few of casualties.
Wrote to Hull about a place March 13th

Transport wagons removing troops on March 15th , 17 wagons. Zepps raided Sutton on April 5th  & were driven off by gun fire.

Miss Sweeting left Eastrington & went to Pocklington on April 6th
Church services in April 7th  at 6pm.
Willie Spence start for France on April 27th . A thunder storm passed over here on April 19th
Mary Roydhouse spent Saturday here April 29th
I spent a week at Now or Never farm April .

Zepps were out on May 2nd at York.The British brought down 3 Zepps up to May 2nd. It was reported that a Zepp was lost & was heard over Holme way.

We started the first rehearsals on the 25th.

September 17th. Willie Spence killed in France by a sniper through the head. Out of 11,000 only 200 answered the roll call.
[Rifleman William Spence was aged 19 when he was killed. He was serving with the King’s Royal Rifle Corps. Willie was born in Hull but his father George was a seaman, later ship’s captain originally from Blacktoft.  His name appears on the Thiepval memorial.]

Mrs Ward property sale on December 7th sold for £142. Mr Bullas was the purchaser.
