Heck rail crash August 1923

Reported as follows: An extraordinary accident occurred at Heck Station, near Selby, on Saturday, when a loaded coal wagon crashed into the bedroom of the station master's house. A King's Cross fish van special bound for York, owing to engine trouble was running behind time, and at Heck Station was stopped in order that it might be diverted on to another line to allow the express to pass but the signalman, instead of moving the lever to divert the van on to another line, threw over the "double points" by mistake, which resulted in the train running into a dead end, where it crashed into a loaded coal wagon. The force of the impact sent the wagon clean through the dead end across the stationmaster's garden, and with its speed still unabated it ran right through the wall of the house and into the stationmaster's bedroom. The guard's van, running on, was sent crashing on to the roof, knocking out the gable end. The stationmaster and his clerk, who were in the office immediately under the bedroom, had a thrilling escape.
